Celebrate Beetle Bailey’s 60 Years at Cartoon Art Museum
Posted on August 30, 2010 · Leave a CommentIt’s hard to believe that the comic strip Beetle Bailey is 60 years old this year! Cartoonist Mort Walker created the character as a college slacker of sorts. When Beetle accidentally enlisted in the Army the popularity of the strip soared. Walker himself had been in the Army and based a lot of the strip on his personal experiences.
A little piece of trivia: did you know that the comic strip Hi and Lois is a spin-off of Beetle Bailey? Lois is actually Beetle’s sister and the characters show up in each others strips from time to time.
More than 1,800 newspapers world-wide carry the Beetle Bailey comic strip and merchandise items includes games, toys, puzzles, patches, apparel, greeting cards and even lottery tickets.
The Cartoon Art Museum has the “60 Years of Beetle Bailey: A Tribute To Mort Walker” exhibit May 8 – September 19, 2010. The museum is 37.2 miles from Oak Creek apartments in Palo Alto, CA (directions via Google Maps).

Matilda at Sylvan Park
Posted on August 3, 2010 · Leave a CommentWouldn’t it be awesome if we could fly? After reading children stories my imagination always went wild. I remember reading Matilda as a kid and laughing at Bruce eating the chocolate cake. I loved the book and wished I had magic powers to fly. When the movie came out, I was more excited to see how everything I had imagined came to life.
Sylvan Park continues their Summer Outdoor Movie Night Series with “Matilda” on Friday at 8:30 PM – 10:30 PM. This a perfect way to spend time with your kids before school starts back, and they’ve got bedtimes. Just pack up your chairs and blankets. The park has popcorn and drinks.
Does anyone remember the principal’s name?

Pellejo Seco in Palo

This week, we’ll get the feel of Afro-Cuban with Pellejo Seco performing at California Avenue. This Afro-Cuban Jazz Ensemble brings a unique sound to the city of Palo Alto. I never heard of Afro-Cuban music, so I did a little research about the band. Right away, I was taken by the sound and really liked the mixture of African and European roots. The music made me want get up and dance.
All of the concerts are free and open to the public! Make it a date night each Saturday for FREE concerts from 6:30 – 8:00 PM in Palo Alto.
